Laser Cut (Images and "Making Video")
Purpose of choosing laser cut:
To show FORM (the structure without interiors, materials, etc), SCALE (there are 1:200 scale sized little people added onto the model for an insight of how large the theatre actually is), CONTEXT (this is the siting, I have chosen for it to sit on a pier-like structure, continuing with the landscape - also it is on the edge of the water - and north facing).

Note: Yes, I know the 3mm Plywood is very thick and it makes the structure very bulky looking. That is not a look I was going for. But the 3mm Plywood was all they had left during that time. I would have normally opted for thin WHITE CARDBOARD to show the elegancy of the form, with the white representing the concrete material.

Siting my Structure

I began with a cityscape. Choosing my structure as a theatre, I wanted it to be dominant and standing out.
My first ideas were similar to that of Rem Koolhaas's Casa de Muscia where the monument is just placed randomly in the middle of suburban areas.

Through time, I gathered suggestions and began making research.
Some of the buildings I have taken into account:
 - Guggenheim Bilbao
 - Sydney Opera House

Basically, I wanted my structure to be placed in the edge of the water, where it is reflected into the waters below. I've noticed that a lot of monuments on the edge are often accompanied by passing road bridges. This allows attention to be caught.

My structure is based on the concept of repetition and the directional movement of lines. These concepts are derived from the architecture of Zaha Hadid.
The function of my structure is that of a theatre or opera house. It is a monumental building.
The entrance is at the front (which is the end furthest away from the waters), the exit is also at the front. There will be a reception and lobby once the entrance is entered.
Viewers are then directed to either normal seating spaces, private spaces, group spaces or standing spaces throughout the balconies. Further towards the water edge side, there is a large site seeing space. I had intended on the site seeing space to be a food court, however I figured that a noisy and fast paced function right next to a theatre hall was not the best idea. It may become disruptive.

Materiality

My monument is large, standing out and dominant.
Like many of Zaha Hadid's work, I'd like to create some clean minimalistic work using glass and concrete. My building is to be a concrete building with a few north facing glass facades.

Additional Format

For my additional format, I had wanted to try something new. Laser cutting.
I had figured CryEngine would cut it to show all aspects of my design.
However, I did not want to show it all using one technique.

My idea was:
Creating a base model shape for my laser cut; nothing too complex, no doors/windows, no details, just the form of the model. With the form of the model laser cut to precision, I would be able to show my concepts better.
Not only am I planning on showing form, but also siting and scale.
Scale is an important factor as it shows the size of the theatre. Theatres come in many different sizes. I plan to create one with a scale similar to that of the Sydney Opera House. Perhaps a little smaller.

Project 2 Exercise: Precedent Study

PRECEDENT STUDY, Due 21st September 2012

1. Brief Outline of Project 1:

In Project 1, I had chosen to study the Architecture of Zaha Hadid. For my reference/inspiration building, Ihad chosen the 21st Century MAXXI Museum in Rome, Italy.
MY CONCEPTS - Concepts commonly seen in Zaha Hadid's work and the MAXXI Museum include:
  • Overlapping
  • Repetition
  • Directional Movement of Lines
I had kept the same concepts throughout Project 1.

My Project 1 Concept Model showed the overlapping, repetition and the directional changes in structure throughout the model.
For the materials, I had originally intended to keep everything black and grey to express the inspirations gathered from Zaha's forms. I had changed the colour and texture of different parts of the model to differentiate between levels and directions using shadows and lighting.
One of the distinct concepts I wanted to express was the continual change of directional structure. It would enable viewers to think of not a normal building, but a maze. I wanted to create one or more paths of different directions to allow the viewer to get thinking about the structure of the building.

2. Visual Analysis of 2x Precedent Studies as a Pair:

My chosen Architect is Zaha Hadid:
  • BMW Showroom (with Patrik Schumacher), Leipzig, Germany
The BMW Showroom consists of two function areas: the exhibition showroom and distribution) and the workshop (mechanical repairs and after sales training).
The print used on the car park is also used on the building facade, this enables the boarders between the parking lot and the building to blur out. Furthermore, large areas of glazed glass reveals a view of exposed cars.

Another Architect I have chosen is UN Studio:
  • Mercedes Benz Museum, Stuttgart, Germany
In this museum, you can see cars alternately from higher, lower, closer and more distant, frontal and more oblique points of view as you move around the museum.. In the collection rooms, you gain access to the car displays via a large staircase and find yourself at equal levels with the cars.
The leaf shaped structural space of the museum allows the generation of panoramic overviews from varying heights. The building also reflects the effect of free, unobstructed spaces flowing into each other.

VISUAL ANALYSIS OF BMW SHOWROOM AND MERCEDES BENZ MUSEUM
  • Left images are of the BMW Showroom and the Right images are of the Mercedes Benz Museum
Concept 1. Overlapping

BMW Showroom: The workshop part of the museum is seen as a black volume pulled out of the car park. The difference in levels creates an image of overlapping and interlocking.
Mercedes Benz Museum: The effect of overlapping is seen throughout the building. The museum consists of 6 levels, all which are not uniform.

Concept 2: Repetition

BMW Showroom: The repetition lays in the structure. The linear structure of the car park leading into the showroom is uniformly repeated beside each other.
Mercedes Benz Museum: Repetition is seen throughout the building. It occurs on all levels of the museum. There is a continuous and repetitive loop occurring within the museum.

Concept 3: Directional Movement of Lines

BMW Showroom: Similar to the concept of repetition, the continuous array of lines are distinct. The lines change direction at one point and continue uniformly.
Mercedes Benz Museum: Again, similar to the concept of repetition, the continuous flowing loops up and down the entire building creates the effect of directional movement.

3. Design Proposal, Design Draft for Assignment 3:

3 Possible Building Types:

  • Bar, Nightclub
  • Skyscraper, Office Building
  • Theatre, Opera House

The concepts and ideas looked at in Project 1 are as follows: Overlapping, Repetition and the Directional Movement of Lines. These concepts have been derived from building types such as museums and showrooms.

Difference:

  • Building types such as museums and showrooms do not have a continuously fast paced circulation. However, in Project 2, I am planning to create an architecture which will function for a fast paced circulation; whether it be a nightclub, an office building or a theatre.

Design Drafts:

 (Will be uploaded later)

4. Short Description on Prescribed Additional Representation:

Considering:

1. Laser Cutting, 3DS Max, Interactive Media (Video and/or PDF) and maybe BuildAR
A high quality render and a 3D prototype of the building.
I am planning to create a piece of architecture with a variety of levels; in this case, levels are best shown when it can be viewed at any angle. Thus, I have chosen a laser cut model for this.
For the overall presentation, there will/might be:

  • 3DS Renders
  • Real time photographs
  • 3D Laser cut model
  • Interactive media of the model in 360 degrees

200 Words Describing Concept:

Still using the same concepts as Assignment 1; the overlapping, repetition and directional movement of lines. However, I have altered the model from a random assortment of unique shards into a more believable architectural concept (more geometrical, or a model with visible structural lines). Instead of having the structures beginning from one from and expanding out into different directions, I have made the newer concept so that the overlapping, interlocking and directional changes are present all over the model.

I have discarded the distinct colors of blue and grey from my old model because now don’t see the relevance of it in relation to my concept.

Context: the structure is a bridge, because it incorporates directional concepts; a bridge is used for one to cross over to the other side (heading forward to a particular direction). For the materials, I had originally wanted to keep everything white and grey to express the inspirations gathered from Zaha Hadid’s concrete forms. But with the whole model in one single color, it was hard to differentiate between levels; the shadows and lighting were also not as distinct as I wanted it to be.

As seen in my CryEngine environment captures, I have placed the concept model in an environment that is dull, dry and lacks vegetation. With the minimalistic background, I wanted to express the bold structural forms of the bridge structure (and I also thought that a white against a dark background would make it stand out more). I was unable to incorporate materials in the CryEngine environment. However I have used materials in the VRay rendering of 3DS Max models. I have mostly metal-type materials to enhance and add a gloss or tint of color to the structures.

In reference to the bridge structure, there is only one possible path. The other paths are dead-ends, they are cut off with the “net” or “gap” structure. A structure with many different directional forms enables viewers to think that it might be like a maze, however because it only has one path, it is more like trial and error math problem.
